MIAMI -- Tim Tebow gave Florida the jolt it needed, and the Gators toughed out a second BCS title in three years.

Their 24-14 win over No. 2 Oklahoma in a choppy, sloppy affair Thursday night made them a national champion. But it likely did little to quiet fans of Southern California, Utah and Texas, all of whom already claimed the top spot.

The high-scoring shootout between Heisman Trophy winners Sam Bradford and Tebow never materialized.

Official announcement of N.C. A&T coach won't come today

N.C. A&T athletics director Wheeler Brown said Friday that a formal announcement about the Aggies' new football coach would not be made today.

Brown said Thursday night that he had offered the coaching job to a candidate and that he had accepted. Brown declined to name the candidate, saying he wanted to resolve other "personnel issues" within the football program first.

Morgan State's Lee gets A&T job

GREENSBORO -- N.C. A&T has a new head football coach. Morgan State defensive coordinator Alonzo Lee accepted the job Thursday, according to several university sources with knowledge of the search process.

Athletics director Wheeler Brown said Thursday night he had extended an offer to one of the two remaining candidates -- Lee or interim coach George Ragsdale -- earlier in the day and that the candidate had accepted.

Clemson sells out Saturday's home game with State

Looks like Clemson's 15-0 start has fans excited about basketball.

The school's ticket office said Thursday that Clemson's game against N.C. State on Saturday is a sellout.

Tiger fans traditionally pack Memorial Stadium for football games. However, there are typically seats available for basketball games at Littlejohn Coliseum. That trend could be changing.

Clemson has opened with 15 straight victories for the second time in three seasons. They are ranked 12th in the latest college basketball poll.

UNCG's losing streak reaches imperfect 10

CULLOWHEE -- Western Carolina scored eight of the game's final 11 points to break a 72-72 tie and claim a 80-75 win over UNCG in Southern Conference men's basketball action at the Ramsey Center on Thursday night.

Redshirt freshman Harouna Mutombo finished with a career-high 29 points to lead Western Carolina (7-5, 2-0 Southern Conference). The Catamounts also got 20 points from Brandon Giles, who played the final 10:54 with four fouls.

Subplots abound in title game

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Bob Stoops posed next to the crystal football and played along with a wave of photographers.

They asked him to look to the left, he did. They asked him to smile, he did. Any shot they wanted Wednesday inside a hotel ballroom, he gave them.

Then a shutterbug shouted to the Oklahoma coach, telling him to hold up his finger, showing who's No. 1. Stoops tilted his head, stared at the guy and kept his hands still.

"Too soon," he said.

ACC commissioner says BCS is legal

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Bowl Championship Series officials believe they're prepared to fend off any legal challenges.

With the Utah attorney general investigating the bowl system for a possible antitrust violation, Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner and BCS coordinator John Swofford said the BCS has carefully considered the legality of its format.

Man wins 15 years of Wake Forest football tickets

WINSTON-SALEM — A 40-year-old physician's assistant from Clemmons has won Wake Forest's "Last Fan Sitting" contest that ended this morning.

Bob Yakos sat outside at BB&T Field for 74.5 hours. He was one of 23 contestants who started the competition at 6:30 a.m. Monday and one of nine who remained at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Yakos then won a Wake Forest football trivia contest to claim his prize, which is football seat rights and four season tickets to Wake Forest football games for the next 15 years. The university estimates the grand prize is worth about $22,000.

Duke keeps Davidson in check

DURHAM -- Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler scored 22 points apiece and No. 2 Duke held off a late Stephen Curry-led charge to beat Davidson 79-67 on Wednesday night.

Gerald Henderson added 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting for the Blue Devils (13-1). They never trailed, outscored the Wildcats 20-7 to start the second half and withstood their late comeback attempt to win their 67th straight nonconference home game.

So few people are better prepared to deal with Yow's decision this week to step away again, this time for the rest of the season.

That said, it doesn't make the pain any less.

Boston College fires Jagodzinski

Boston College fired Jeff Jagodzinski on Wednesday, days after he was warned of dismissal if he interviewed for the coaching job with the New York Jets.

BC athletics director Gene DeFilippo told Jagodzinski on Saturday that his job would be in jeopardy if he went through with the Jets interview. Jagodzinski met with the Jets on Tuesday night.

A few hours later, at a Wednesday morning meeting lasting 25 minutes, DeFilippo told Jagodzinski he was out.

Tar Heels bounce College of Charleston

HARVARD 82, NO. 17 BOSTON COLLEGE 70: Jeremy Lin scored 27 points to lead Harvard to an 82-70 upset over Boston College on Wednesday night, three days after the Eagles upset previously top-ranked North Carolina.

Corey Raji paced Boston College (13-3) with 16 points, Tyrese Rice had 14, Joe Trapani had 12. Rice was held to three points until the final four minutes.

Oliver McNally had 19 points and Andrew Pusar 13 for the Crimson (8-6).

Yow won't return this season

RALEIGH -- N.C. State women's basketball coach Kay Yow will not return to the team this season due to health issues related to her long fight against cancer.

In a statement released by the school Tuesday, the Hall of Fame coach said she just doesn't have the energy to coach the way she always has before. She has missed the past four games, starting Dec. 22 against Columbia in New York.

Yow said she will revisit the decision no later than the end of the season. Her contract runs through the 2011-12 season.

GREENSBORO -- Morgan State defensive coordinator Alonzo Lee has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Lee Fobbs as N.C. A&T's next football coach, according to sources within the university.

A&T athletics director Wheeler Brown said Tuesday he has narrowed his list to two candidates, but he declined to name them. Sources said those two candidates are Lee, a former assistant coach at A&T, and interim Aggies coach George Ragsdale.

RALEIGH (AP) — N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson won't need surgery to repair the knee he injured in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

School officials said today that an MRI this week confirmed doctors' initial diagnosis of a sprained knee and a torn posterior cruciate ligament.

The ACC rookie of the year didn't return after he was hurt in the second quarter of the Wolfpack's 29-23 loss to Rutgers on Dec. 29.
