Brinks employee dies after shooting at Friendly Center

Monday, December 15, 2008

GREENSBORO - An employee of Brinks Security died this afternoon after being shot during a robbery this morning outside the Old Navy store at Friendly Center, police said today.

Crystal and Steven Carter of Reidsville were in the front part of the store doing Christmas shopping when they heard a gunshot.

When the first shot rang out, everyone fell to the ground, she said. The store was silent.

"Not a word," Crystal Carter said.

Witnesses said two shots were fired.

Soon afterward, they saw a man running toward the back of the store.

The couple then saw another man lying on the ground in the front of the store.

Crystal Carter gripped the security guard's hand during the wait for emergency personnel to arrive.

"All they got was Old Navy's money," Carter said. "It's horrible. I've never seen anything like this in my life."

Police described the suspect as a black man with a dark complexion, 5 feet 10 to 6 feet tall and wearing a shoulder-length, dark red wig.

He had on teal pants and a white shirt, similar to those worn by hospital employees, with a print design on the shirt and a long-sleeve white T-shirt underneath. He wore white tennis shoes. The suspect left the area in a black vehicle that possibly had a spoiler on the trunk.

At a news conference near the scene of the shooting, police Chief Tim Bellamy said police got a call about the robbery at 10 a.m.

The robbery appeared to be pre-arranged because customers saw the suspect inside Old Navy beforehand, knowing the Brinks truck was arriving at some point, Bellamy said.

The Brinks employee had picked up money in the store when the suspect approached him. Several bags that the victim was carrying were later reported missing.

The suspect took off on foot after the shooting, then got into a vehicle near a Wachovia bank, Bellamy said.

The suspect remained at large as of Monday afternoon.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Police will review surveillance tapes from stores at the shopping center, Bellamy said.

"A lot of these businesses have video surveillance cameras and most have reported to us that they do have videos that were working today," Bellamy said.

No store employees or customers were injured. A second Brinks employee with the victim also was not injured.

Stephanie Newton and Cody Harker had gone to Old Navy to exchange a present for Newton's daughter.

About 10 or 12 people were in the store as it opened. Shortly after 10 a.m., mom and son were in the girl's section when they heard a gunshot inside the store.

"The first pop, everybody turned around," recalled Newton, 42, who lives in Stokesdale. "It was weird."

When the suspect fired a second shot, Newton, Harker and another woman nearby ducked behind a rack of clothes. Newton spoke in a whisper when she called 911 from her cell phone.

"We weren't sure what had happened," Newton said. "It was horrible."

When a woman screamed, they stood up. There was commotion at the front of the store Someone demanded blankets to staunch the guard's bleeding. Harker, 18 and a student at Duke University in Durham, found some and rushed to help.

Outside, Katie Nugent, 62, was arriving to meet her daughter and grandson. As she got to the front door, she saw the security guard lying outside with blood nearby.

"I backed up and thought, 'Oh, my gosh,'" Nugent said.

Old Navy employee David Hawks heard both the shots as he was getting ready to clock out. "I was in the fitting room," Hawks said. "My shift was over."

Carrie Gatling, an employee at Old Navy, had arrived at the store about 10:20 a.m., 25 minutes before her shift began.

She saw police and fire and rescue vehicles in the parking lot.

"My manager told me to go home," Gatling said. "I'm really shocked."

Police had blocked off the parking lot in front of Rite Aid near Old Navy down to the Barnes & Noble.

Friendly Center, located at 600 Green Valley Road, did not close after the shooting.

This is getting utterly ridiculous. The robberies in this town are out of control and are getting more violent.

So you think it's not safe here.......move to Houston, LA, New York then you can talk about real crime. This is not an everyday occurance. For many cities, it is.

I know exactly what you are saying. Me and my wife left the Triad in August. We now live where you can walk the streets at night and feel safe. No longer have to keep an eye out for someone to crack you over the head for $5. This website has become all home invasions and robberies. It really is a sad situation. The crackheads were fine when they stayed on their own side of the line. That's what has changed in the last few years.

Its a shame a better description of the "alleged" shooter can't be provided. Hope its not because of political correctness. Someone should tell the Friendly Center manager that he oversees a shopping center, not a mall.

I hate to say this - but Greensboro in general is a very safe area. I moved down here from Richmond, Virginia where they had a killing everyweek. We are in a safe area and I feel that these crimes are coming from people who do not live in the area and take advantage of us because we do feel safe. Don't diss Greensboro because of one shooting. I think we all need to sit back and be thankful that we do live in a great place to call home.

Gee thirstytarheel, are you really thirstybigot in disguise? Might you mean to insinuate that the alleged suspect MIGHT be black or Hispanic? Gee, don't mince words. If you are prejudiced be bold and don't hide it. Politically correct has nothing to do with it. I guarantee if the perpetrator was suspected to be a black or Hispanic and they had been seen it would be in the media releases. THEY are NOT shy and love to feed the fires of discontent among races. Newsflash, white people do dope and commit crimes also.

Are you serious tnbassbuster? Did you read the media release? If so you might want to go back to school because you missed a little part.
"Police described the suspect as a black man with a dark complexion, 5 feet 10 to 6 feet tall and wearing a shoulder-length, dark red wig."
He was a black man and the media release did say so. If anyone is perptuating bigotry on this site it is you.

Race seems to be even more an issue now that we have an African American President to be. If we all want to remain divided, then let the African Americans pay the tax money to pay for their people who commit crimes and are in jail, and the Hispanics to pay for their own people as well. Whites also do the same, but that wouldn't be fair because white people would have less tax money taken out-proven statistic, and then other races would still cry racism because they are now Americans!

I agree with summerfield4747. Greensboro is an exceptionally safe community, particularly the area of Greensboro where Friendly Center is located. That said, both the Greensboro Police Dept. and Friendly Center need to take decisive action to reassure customers and citizens. Robberies occur all over the Triad everyday. But this particular incident has garnered more attention because the time of year and where it occurred.

Is it really safe? Wasn't the following just in the news 2 weeks ago? http://www.wxii12.com/news/18199429/detail.html#-

If we're number one in the state for crime, it's not exactly safe! Although, I will agree that part of town is normally pretty safe. But you have to think about other parts of town when talking about how safe or not safe the area is. Remember the shootings at the mall last year? Seems to be a lot of robberies and shootings happening all over the city lately.

The moral to this story is not rather Greensboro is safe or not! It is that a young man, whom has a toddler son and family was killed this morning. That is what the article if about. Who cares rather Greensboro is safe or not! Crime is every where one goes...believe it or not. Someone has lost a father, son, brother, nephew, uncle, etc,. does anyone even care about that? All over money, the ROOT OF ALL EVIL!

I pulled up to Old Navy this morning around 10:05 am to go shop, right after this happened, unaware. I know the time because I remember checking b/c I thought they did not open until 10am. What I saw was a man lying in the doorway in a pool of blood surrounded by people trying to help save his life. It was horrible and I cannot get this image out of my head, and now that I read the victim died, I am even more upset and shaken. It's a very scary world when this happens anywhere but especially in broad daylight, at a busy shopping center at Xmas, in our safe little haven of Greensboro...now this poor man's family has lost a loved one in such a tragic way right before Xmas. It's tragic and uneccessary. I unfortunately did not see anything of value to police, just the victim which was unsettling enough to make me turn around and leave. I cannot imagine how shaken shoppers and employees of Old Navy must feel if I am this upset as just a passerby. I pray for this man's family.

It's awful to see these events, and I'm sure all our thoughts go out to the family of the Brinker employee who was killed this morning. Unfortunately with the economy such as it is, and with the holiday season upon us, people are getting more desperate for money. Our business in Greensboro was broken into last night for the second time in 3 months. Everyone just take that extra step to be cautious, and keep an open eye in your community this holiday season.

It does not matter what color the skin is of this shooter. All that matters is a man is dead and will never see his family again. This just goes to show how bad things have gotten since the economy has gotten worse, and you can believe there will be more instances of this going on. I can not believe all you ignorant people argueing over the color of his skin. A man is dead here just the same. It don't matter if the shooter was black, white, green, red, or blue. This man was doing his job minding his own business supporting his family and this asshole shot him.

Here we go again. The clock is ticking, violent crimes are out of control (4 armed robberies within 24 hours last week). A murder at Friendly Center in the middle of the day at the height of shopping season! When is the public going to demand more. I am steadily watching the decline in the quality of life of a city that I have invested years into. Our leaders remain silent while the honest representation of what is going on in Greensboro is making its rounds in the press - statewide and nationally.

The thugs who commit such acts don't work when the economy is booming. There are some people among us who don't value life regardless of the unemployment rate. Subhuman beasts to put it bluntly.

My sincere condolences go to the victim's family. I hope justice is served soon.

I'm concerned about the location and availability of Old Navy at Friendly to criminals. I live in Burlington and often go to Friendly. I have been in the Old Navy there on 3 occasions and witnessed shoplifting every time, and they all get away. One time I looked around for anyone, a manager, anything to report these people stuffing clothes under their coats and could find no one except the cashiers who were swamped. They take off out of the doors and the alarm barely buzzes and off they go. Another time I was checking out and the store was not busy. A man walks right out with some shirts and the alarm is barely making a noise. The cashier calls someone on her headset and then tells whomever is on the headset, "Oh well, there he goes, he's getting in his car now, forget it". No one makes an effort to stop anyone. I will not be returning to that Old Navy, ever. Now I read about this poor man who lost his life to some thug needing money for all his addictions, I'm sure of it.

Maggiemay-
Most retail establishments have a very limited Loss Prevention staff, and very few are allowed to pursue shoplifters. there are exceptions, but given that there are people out there that will kill you for daring to confront them, I would hope a cashier or inventory clerk would just record what information they could and call the police for a phone report.
long ago I watched an off-duty officer chase a shoplifter to his car where he tried (fortunately unsuccessfully) to retrieve a loaded handgun from under his seat.

truly pathetic - this kind of barbarism will continue until swift, sure and appropriate punishment is the rule rather than the exception - when the perp is caught (and he will be), some liberal psalm-singer will cry out about the worth of human life and a defense lawyer will cite his troubled youth and confused state as the reasons for his actions - hogwash! - a public hanging will be the only just reaction - it won't bring the guard back, but it will assure that the killer will never repeat and it won't cost taxpayers $44k/yr to warehouse this piece of dirt - get real - i would happily pull the trapdoor lever

I hear people suggesting that somehow the economy is a rationale for this kind of behavior.
This is in effect suggesting that anyone struggling through bad times has the potential to
murder an armed employee in front of and in total disregard to the lives of unsuspecting shoppers
in order to take other peoples money for his own use.
By the grace of God, no one else was hurt, and I pray for the healing of this man's family.

My heart and prayers go out to this man's family...lives changed in an instant. As a security guard, he, undoubtedly, protected every shopper in there. First and foremost, his family needs to know that he died a HERO. I read all of the comments discussing safety of Greensboro, comparing the crime rate of one city to another. Everyone seems to be seeking answers...confused...sick to death of senseless deaths over what? Money? (We all know there is no amount of money that can replace a man's life. There is no amount of money worthy of a man's life.) I hope the family will find a way to forgive the man in the green pants who changed their lives forever. I hope that the family of the man in the green pants will find a way to forgive him as well...because he changed their lives forever, too. I hope the man in the green pants will turn himself in and seek that forgiveness.

So, what can we do as a community to change things? To start...pray! Prayer changes lives. Give and forgive. Giving and forgiving changes lives. Most importantly, seek answers from the Most High God. It is only that unconditional LOVE and the offering of the same to others that can truly bring change for the better. It is time for all of those churches in Greensboro to start opening their doors to the homeless, to bring food and clothing to drug addicts strung out and lost without hope, and to press on to reach those that seem unreachable. It’s Christmas. What better time to stop judging and to start spreading the Joy of Christ to those who truly need Him. Will that stop every senseless crime, probably not; but will it stop hearts from breaking right here and right now and bring peace to those who seek to find it…definitely.

This whole incident is really just very sad and it makes me realize how human life really means nothing to some people. I know that all I can really do is pray for the family of this man, but maybe there is some other way to help as well. If anyone is interested in getting together and making a fund for this mans family contact me at dottiemsawyer@yahoo.com. We can at least talk about what options we have. I know he has a very young child and a wife that needed him. At Christmas time I think what they really need is someone reaching out a helping hand.

I used to work at the gas station next to the old navy in friendly shopping center. Since, I heard a lot of robbery around the area; then I resignated the job at the beginning of December. Under the depressed economy, people are stealing and the robbery increased. What is wrong with this society? Human being not act like the human; People start to survive in the evil way. When I heard the news about the robbery in Old Navy, I really sad about the fact that someone died. It's insaned the robber killed a person! I really hope the peaceful in the world and surround by where we are!

Yes Reaper, I read the media release. Did thirsty read it? I don't know how more accurate of a description he would expect. Sounds pretty detailed to me, but when I made the comment, the description was not part of the original article. It was updated when the info became available. I simply was pointing out that a man was laying wounded in a hospital (has now died) while thirsty was making insinuations that the media didn't want to make race an issue MY thoughts and prayers are, and were, with the guard and his family, not with the news media's political correctness. The man is just as dead if the shooter was green. The poor guys family is missing a son, a father, a husband etc. I doubt that they are concerned what color the man was that shot him.
