Watch your speed: State troopers will target fast holiday drivers
RALEIGH (AP) — Thanksgiving holiday travelers should keep an eye on their speedometers.
The Highway Patrol will aggressively enforce speeding laws across the state until Nov. 30. The patrol said it will conduct a slowdown operation similar to one in April when 11,241 drivers were ticketed.
Local law enforcement officers will do the same on interstate and major four-lane highways.
Drivers are encouraged to report speeders.
The patrol said speed is the primary cause of traffic accidents and fatalities, and the number of drivers who exceed 100 mph has risen 175 percent in the last decade.
The holiday also will see less road construction. The state's Department of Transportation said Thursday most projects will be suspended from Thanksgiving until Dec. 1.
