YWCA begins raising funds to pay its bills

YWCA begins raising funds to pay its bills

Tuesday, November 18, 2008
( updated Monday, November 24, 8:19 am)

GREENSBORO — The president of the YWCA board of directors said Monday the financially troubled nonprofit is now operating in the red.

“We have more bills than we have money in our basic accounts,” said Judi Rossabi, who became the board’s leader in October. “We are in the process of getting hard numbers.”

Rossabi said she could not provide specifics about how much the 105-year-old nonprofit owes or how much cash it has on hand, adding that it could be “a few more weeks” before she has those answers.

“I do not feel like it is in chaos,” Rossabi said of the Y’s financial situation. “But I do feel like we need a little more time.”

The Y’s problems became public Friday when the agency failed to meet its $30,000 payroll.

As a cost-saving step, employees will now be paid monthly rather than every two weeks. The next pay day will be Nov. 26.

Rossabi said the Y’s finance committee met Monday and will make recommendations to the full board Thursday.

“Our objectives are to decrease or eliminate our net deficit, re-establish our partnerships with vendors and stabilize our whole system of operations,” Rossabi said. “We are looking at things we can do to move our system forward.”

In other developments Monday, the Y:

* Kicked off a major fund-raising drive. Called the Snowflake campaign, the effort is one of two held annually by the Y. Officials hope it brings in $25,000 by the end of the year.

The agency will send out letters to 1,500 people, e-mails will go out to 1,000 more, and workers will pass out fliers to Y users, asking them to support the campaign.

“We are urging the board to get out and talk to people they know in the community and ask for support,” Rossabi said. “We are aware what a difficult time it is (with the economy).”

* Began a scheduled audit of the agency’s books. The last audit, which covered the 2007 fiscal year, turned up no problems, said Rossabi, who added that the board has no indication that any money has been misappropriated.

She said the current financial problems came to light after the forced departure of Adrienne Witherspoon, who served as the Y’s executive director from November 2007 to Oct. 21.

“We decided it was not a good fit,” Rossabi said of Witherspoon’s tenure. “Membership was not going up and participation was not increasing.”

She said the board also cited Witherspoon for a lack of communication.

Efforts Monday to reach Witherspoon, who lives in Durham, were unsuccessful.

But those who know her have come to her defense, saying she was surprised to be asked to leave.

“She had been doing everything she could to keep the organization afloat,” said Conrad Airall, a friend and attorney who lives in Raleigh. “Her reputation is being tarnished when she was only trying to do what was right.”

Airall said he is not representing Witherspoon.

Y officials say the agency went through four accountants during Witherspoon’s tenure.

As the Y’s financial problems began to surface, officials shared their woes with the Weaver Foundation and the United Way of Greater Greensboro.

The United Way chose to give the Y its $28,000 monthly allocation two weeks early and continues to monitor the situation.

Officials at the Weaver Foundation say they need more information before deciding if they will offer financial assistance.

“I want to see a projection of what they are going to do over three months to be on a sound financial footing,” said Skip Moore, the foundation’s president. “It’s going to take a lot of good analysis and tough decisions for them to come out OK on the other side, especially in this economy.”

It comes as no surprise that the Y is in a financial crunch. Leadership under Adrienne Witherspoon was less than desirable. Her tenure led to the departure (several forced) of many well respected teachers in the Kidspace program. Communication under Ms. Witherspoon's leadership was virtually non-existent. I have noticed increased morale in the agency in the last few weeks. While that chapter is closed, I am now concerned that the downward turn that the Y has taken could affect the future of the Kidspace program.

It comes as no surprise that the YWCA is in a financial crunch. Leadership under Adrienne Witherspoon was less than desirable. During her brief tenure, several well respected teachers departed from the Kidspace program (many by force). Communication was virtually non-existent during the time that Ms. Witherspoon served as Executive Director. In the last few weeks, I have noticed increased morale among Y employees. I now am concerned about how this downward turn of events will affect the future of the Kidspace program.

Look the YWCA has been in the RED since that flowers lady was there. Why did you think she left she was making a lot of money at the YWCA. Flowers knew that she had mess the YWCA thats way she left. The new board lady sounds about crazy if she thinks they Y just got in the RED. The new board lady keep holla that Witherspoon mess the Y up. Only if she knew the real deal better yet all she has to is have a talk with Flowers. I bet you she could explan it better. United Way need to take that place over because the board memders are lost as hell. I mean the new lady is lost her self she do not know how to run the place but thats the YWCA they do not care. I pray and hope that nobody helps the YWCA. Witherspoon did all she could at the YWCA.

I guess the board chair (Yassabbi) wants us to believe that a 105-year-old agency goes belly up in 7 months. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that they (the board) only became aware of the Y’s financial problems a few weeks ago after the forced departure of Witherspoon. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that the paid development officer (Powell) has done such an outstanding job raising money until Witherspoon got there. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that we should have confidence in them and send them $$. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that an agency that can’t make a $30K payroll is not in chaos. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that their membership has gone down just because of the economy/Witherspoon. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that the agency’s audit never revealed any financial problems. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that the YWCA was sound until Witherspoon arrived. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that they had absolutely no idea that they were bankrupt, in chaos, lacked vision, and void of leadership at the board level. I guess the board chair wants us to believe that all of the YWCA’s problems are Witherspoon's fault! I don’t believe any of it and neither does anyone with just an ounce of common sense! Do the community a favor…the entire Board should resign and United Way should audit the programs and financial records top to bottom using an independent auditor before they give the YWCA another penny! STEWARDSHIP!

Look YMomma you did not know what you was doing in Kidspace. You was that stupid you was talking to your parents about Ms. Witherspoon. May you be you need to tell the truth why she let you go. You sound about as you look. Kidspace is doing so good right now. When you was there it was a mess think about. And by the way you was the only person that was let go out of kidspace.

First of all, I do not know who you think I am, but that's besides the point. More importantly, you are quite ignorant, and if your child is in the Kidspace program, I certainly hope they are learning to master the english language, because that is a skill that you definitely lack. I sure hope lawyer is just your "blog name" and not your profession, because there is no way in hell I'd want you representing me. With that said, get your facts straight and try using spell check, or did they not teach you that in your online law school?

Once again, I do not know who you think I am. You really should not assume - when you do so, you make an Ass out of U and Me, well really just you. I am not, nor have I ever been an employee of Kidspace. I am simply voicing, my concerns over the past leadership. If you think the program is "doing fine", then you obviously don't have an interest/child involved with the Y. I pray and hope that you and the YWCA get the help you both need.

I have been following this blog with some interest. An honest conversation between two people, which has now assumed a personal dimension. Firstly, Lawyer, you have no right to call out anybody's possible real name (if so share yours) and bring their children into this conversation. Secondly, anybody who has children in any facility should pay close attention to the activities of the facility in the interest of the children. There is nothing wrong with being critical, especially if you're paying money. You are so low as a person to attack people and their children on a conversation between two adults. You are sick, uncouth, and certainly suffering from some psychological problems to attack innocent children. What have the children done to you for such defamatory characterization? Your gross ignorance and pitiful predicament makes me wonder what education you have, and how you are allowed to spill venom on this forum. You do not belong to this forum, you are unprofessional, you're sick and you deserve some immediate treatment. I know you work for the YWCA, I know that for sure. You are a disgruntled employee who has lost the support of an incompetent boss, get a life and probably find a new job. If you can call people out, then sign your real name, that means you have guts and credibility. You give a bad name to hard working people, especially people with very little education who cannot write clearly. Continue with this name calling and I will call you out and report you to your superiors. You should not be surprised if you are without a job before the end of this month. I do not know the family you just attacked, but I decided to respond because such acts of cowardice is nothing but mediocracy and must not be tolerated by any concerned citizen.
