Man wounded by Surry County sheriff's deputy
PILOT MOUNTAIN (AP) - A North Carolina sheriff says one of his deputies has shot and critically wounded a man who tried to hit the deputy with a car.
Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said a Pilot Mountain police officer tried to stop a car for a routine check about 1 a.m. Tuesday, but the driver sped away. Surry County sheriff's deputies and the North Carolina Highway Patrol joined the chase.
Authorities said the driver wrecked his car, then tried to hit a deputy with his vehicle. The deputy fired, striking the man.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported the man was flown to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where he was in critical condition. His name has not been released.
The deputy suffered a minor injury. His name has not been released.
