Savvy Shopper: Yarn store has new name, look

The shop looks familiar, with its distinctive window displays and balls of colorful threads. But things have changed for a downtown Greensboro yarn shop, starting with the name and the owners.

Gate City Yarns, at 231 S. Elm St., opened earlier this fall in the same corner store that used to house Yarn’s Etc. The shop is now co-owned by Tina Feir and Carl Beeson, veterans of the former shop who renovated the space to bring the 110-year-old building back to its original condition.

“We did a total remodel of the space,” Beeson said. “It looks completely different on the inside.”

Despite the economic slowdown, Beeson said he and Feir are pleased with the way business has progressed since their September opening.

“We tried to focus on having good products and a broad knowledge base on which to help our customers,” he said.

Gate City Yarns is open Tuesdays from noon to 7 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shop is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Hobby Lobby coming to Alamance Crossing

Hobby Lobby, an arts and crafts superstore, will open a new location in Alamance Crossing.

The store is scheduled to open in the Burlington shopping center in May.

Construction on the 52,000-square-foot store will begin this month. The Burlington store will be the chain’s fourth; other locations are in Greensboro, High Point and Asheboro.

Dewey’s Bakery opens four locations for the holidays

Dewey’s Bakery won’t limit its baked goodies to Friendly Center. The company plans to open four stores and kiosks for the holiday season, including the store at Friendly Center reported last week in this column.

The additional stores will be at the Shoppes at Wendover Village, Four Seasons Town Centre and Kernersville’s Southside Square.
