The sweat life of Zack & Cody

Thursday, August 28, 2008

GREENSBORO -- Disillusioned with today's youths? Think they spend all their time playing video games?

Don't be too hasty with your assumptions. At least not until you look at 14-year-old Clyde "Cody" Alston and 10-year-old Zackaryan "Zack" Locklear.

During a hot summer's day, not long after getting out of school, the two friends were low on cash but high on thirst.

"We were tired of asking our parents for money," Cody says, "so we grabbed our mowers."
Walking the streets of their neighborhood near Wiley Elementary School, uncut grass was their prey - and they found plenty of it.

"After that we started making mad money," Cody says with a smile.

A summer job. Right in their own backyards. Helping neighbors while helping themselves.
"Actually, we have two jobs," Zack says. "School and this."

And business has been good. Now flush with cash, the boys plan to spend the money on themselves. Sort of.

"We're going to buy our own school supplies," Zack says.

Disillusioned with today's youths? Maybe we just need to look in the right places.
